More About Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a system of healthcare that relies on manual techniques to restore health to the individual.

Osteopathic treatment is normally associated with musculo-skeletal complaints. Early Osteopaths sought to address varied complaints with their treatment, in the belief that if every part of the body is able to receive a healthy flow of blood then it has the capacity to heal itself.

As an Osteopath I understand that every part of your body is connected to every other part. Therefore when considering your problems, I will look at your ‘whole picture’ to find the cause. Pain can have a local cause, but it may be initiated or aggravated by something apparently distant. A problem at the ankle may manifest in the back, as the base upon which you walk has been altered. Mis-alignment within the jaw may lead to problems in the neck. By taking in the whole picture we can find answers that may have previously seemed elusive.

Osteopathic treatment aims to put your body ‘back into balance’. By removing restrictions in the muscles, ligaments and joints, good blood and lymphatic flow is restored. Each cell can then receive the nutrients it needs and have its waste removed before it starts to irritate the sensitive pain nerves nearby. In these optimum conditions our bodies can then undergo the inherent healing processes they possess, repairing injuries and building strong robust structures that can withstand the daily assaults we throw at them.

As our understanding of disease and illness has developed, we now know that many conditions are due either to external ‘invaders’ or malfunction of the body's physiology. We quite properly treat them with drugs or surgeries to correct the problem. The role of Osteopathy alongside standard healthcare can serve to support healing methods, in musculo-skeletal conditions as well as many others.
